Celebrating Some of Our Favorite Black Creative Voices
Our Team’s Favorite Books, Shows & Movies!
Black History Month is the perfect time to shine a spotlight on brilliant Black creators who inspire, entertain, and move us with their stories. We asked the Spark Point team to share their favorite books, shows, and movies by Black authors, writers, and directors—and they delivered some absolute gems! NOTE: We acknowledge that celebrating Black lives is a year-round action.
Kalen shared that one of their beloved novels is The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. They find Butler’s work prophetic and particularly relevant today–
Here’s a refrain that sits with Kalen daily: Everything you touch you changeEverything you change changes youThe only everlasting truth is changeGod is change
Caroline’s favorite TV series: Insecure on Hulu because Issa Rae is a comedic genius! She likes that the show brilliantly captures the awkward, messy, and downright hilarious moments of navigating life and love. It’s a reminder that none of us really have it all figured out — and that’s okay.
Whitney loves the show How To Die Alone on Hulu, which was created by and stars Natasha Rothwell. She’s one of the four main characters on Insecure, and touches on how a near-death experience inspires a woman to dream and live and love life again.. On social media, Whitney learns a lot from Ericka Hart’s reels and opinions shared on Instagram.
Bre has been enjoying Amanda Gorman’s Call Us What We Carry poetry book lately.
