Almost five years into running Spark Point, I sought out Her Corner to help me grow my business and increase my effectiveness. Her Corner provides support, coaching, and education on business growth and scalability specifically for women business owners. Here are my top three takeaways from this awesome experience:
I’m not alone. I joined a group of eight women all working to build their businesses. Some had very early-stage businesses and some had been in operation for more than 10 years. Listening to them, I learned that the challenges that I face in growing my business are very similar to challenges faced by businesses that are nothing like mine. In any group like this where you’re sharing a lot of information about yourself, it’s really reassuring to hear that others are facing the same issues, and it creates a connection that can be valuable for years to come.
I don’t have to know how to do everything. Running a business means solving problems, both for my clients and for myself. But women approach their work from a different angle than men, and I learned that women have a tendency to shortchange or second-guess themselves in a way that men don’t. Her Corner helped me recognize where I might be holding myself back, and gave me concrete tools that I can use over and over to set and achieve my business goals. Specifically, they gave me worksheets to help me solve the problems I encounter everyday, from pricing, to business planning, to marketing, to finance.
I can achieve my goals. I know “empowered” has become a buzzword, but in this context, I think it’s appropriate. The whole structure of the accelerator and Her Corner is about deciding what you want, and using the framework of the accelerator to get it. The reason why many people become entrepreneurs is because they want to be in a position to chart their own course and their own success, and this program really helps you to do that. Her Corner gave me the structure on which to hang my business and the tools and best practices to build it. But more importantly, the accelerator truly increased my confidence in taking the company where I want it to go. It’s no longer a question of is it possible, but it’s more a question of how to get it all done—because now I have the roadmap to get to the next step.
